What is UIDAI?

UIDAI stands for Unique Identification Authority of India (भारतीय विशिष्ट पहचान प्राधिकरण). It is the government authority that issues Aadhaar numbers and looks after the Aadhaar system.

Aadhaar is the 12-digit number. UIDAI is the authority behind it. When you download, update or lock your Aadhaar, you do it on UIDAI’s own website, not on a third-party site.

Online or at an Aadhaar centre?

Some things you can do from home. Others need a visit. This is what UIDAI’s own pages list.

Aadhaar Seva Kendra: find one and book a slot

An Aadhaar Seva Kendra is UIDAI’s own centre for enrolment, updates, and downloading or printing Aadhaar.

Seva Kendra

7 days

Open 9:30 AM to 5:30 PM. Booking a slot is free and does not need a registered mobile number. Walk-ins are taken with a token, and the last token of the day is given at 5:30 PM.

Find a centreBook a slot
  1. Find your nearest centre on UIDAI’s centre locator. Banks, post offices and state governments also run Aadhaar kendras.
  2. Book a slot on the official appointment page. One person can book at most 2 appointments in a month.
  3. Carry your Aadhaar and the original documents for the detail you are changing. The operator verifies them at the centre.
  4. Keep the acknowledgement slip. Its update request number lets you check the status later.

UIDAI helpline and how to complain

Start with the helpline. If that does not solve it, file a written complaint.

Helpline

1947

Toll free. The automated menu works 24 hours. Calls to an executive are answered Monday to Saturday, 7 AM to 11 PM, and Sunday, 8 AM to 5 PM. Closed on 26 January, 15 August and 2 October.

  1. Keep your EID, URN or SRN ready, if you have one. It makes your complaint faster to find.
  2. Call 1947, or open the grievance page on the UIDAI site and fill in the form.
  3. Note the complaint number you get, and check its status in the “Check Grievance / Feedback Status” section of the UIDAI site.
  4. If it is still not solved, file it on the government grievance portal.

All the ways to reach UIDAI

UIDAI’s Citizen’s Charter says a complaint is taken up only after the time promised for the service itself has passed, and that a grievance is normally resolved within 30 days of receipt. Keep your EID, URN or SRN ready whichever way you go.

Stay safe from fake Aadhaar calls and websites

Fraudsters borrow UIDAI’s name to get OTPs and fees. A few habits protect you.

Safety tips
  • Never read out an OTP to a caller or give it to an agent. An OTP is meant only for the person using it.
  • Use only the addresses in the table above. A look-alike site that asks for money or your Aadhaar details is not UIDAI’s.
  • First-time enrolment is free. UIDAI’s update charges are fixed, so pay only that and keep your acknowledgement slip.
  • Do not post your Aadhaar number on social media or other public places. UIDAI has advised against it. Check where your Aadhaar was used from time to time.
  • When a business only needs to see your Aadhaar, share a masked Aadhaar and, where it works, lock your biometrics.
  • Tricked into paying? Call the national cyber fraud helpline 1930 or report at cybercrime.gov.in. For an Aadhaar problem, call UIDAI on 1947.

UIDAI questions answered

What is the UIDAI helpline number and when does it work?

The toll-free number is 1947. The automated menu works 24 hours. You can speak to an executive Monday to Saturday from 7 AM to 11 PM, and on Sunday from 8 AM to 5 PM. Support is offered in 12 languages. UIDAI’s Citizen’s Charter lists the helpline as closed on 26 January, 15 August and 2 October.

How do I complain to UIDAI?

Call 1947, use the Grievance and Feedback page on uidai.gov.in, or email help@uidai.gov.in. You can also visit or write to a Regional Office. UIDAI also lists its Aadhaar Mitra chatbot and the government’s CPGRAMS portal. The steps and links are in the helpline section above.

How long does UIDAI take to resolve a complaint?

UIDAI’s Citizen’s Charter says a grievance is normally resolved within 30 days of receipt. It also says a grievance is taken up only after the time promised for the service itself has passed. You can follow your complaint under “Check Grievance / Feedback Status” on uidai.gov.in. The Charter can change, so check it on the UIDAI site.

Which number do I give when I complain?

Give the number from your slip: your Enrolment ID (EID), Update Request Number (URN) or Service Request Number (SRN). It helps UIDAI find your case faster. If you have none of them, you can still call 1947.

Can I update my Aadhaar at a UIDAI office?

No. UIDAI’s head office and regional offices are administrative offices. For an update or a new enrolment, go to an Aadhaar Seva Kendra. Use a regional office for a complaint, or when an update was rejected because it crossed a limit. UIDAI says to reach it through 1947 or help@uidai.gov.in.

Which is the official UIDAI app?

The Aadhaar app, from the Play Store on Android or the App Store on iPhone, as UIDAI’s app FAQ lists. In it you can download your e-Aadhaar, lock or unlock biometrics, see authentication history, and change your mobile number or address. An address update in the app costs Rs 75 and can take up to 30 days. Name, gender, email and date of birth changes are not available in the app, and photo, fingerprint and iris updates need a centre. The app cannot be used outside India.

What is the difference between uidai.gov.in and myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in?

uidai.gov.in is UIDAI’s information website, with FAQs, notices, offices and the grievance page. myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in is the portal where you use your own Aadhaar services, such as download, update, lock and PVC card order, with an OTP on your registered mobile number.

Details on this page come from UIDAI’s own Grievance Redressal, Aadhaar Services, Updating Data, Aadhaar Seva Kendra, Aadhaar app FAQ, Citizen’s Charter and contact pages. Check them for any change.
