Aadhaar Enrolment Process for Adults & Children
Enrolling for Aadhaar is a free, in-person process. Here is the step-by-step process for adults and children, required documents, how to check your status, and processing timelines.
The Basics First
Aadhaar enrolment is free and can only be done in person at an official centre, there is no online enrolment, and anyone offering it online for a fee is not genuine. You need to enrol only once in your life; the number never changes afterwards, only your details do.
There is no age limit, even a newborn can be enrolled. What differs by age is the process and which biometrics are captured, covered below.
Adult Enrolment (Age 18+)
For individuals 18 and older, enrolment captures full biometric and demographic data.
Locate an enrolment centre: visit a recognised Aadhaar Seva Kendra (ASK) or an authorised bank or post office. Our UIDAI guide shows how to find one and book a slot.
Submit the form and documents: fill out the Aadhaar Enrolment Form and present your original Proof of Identity and Proof of Address.
Provide demographic information: give your name, date of birth, gender, and address. A mobile number is optional but strongly recommended, you’ll need it for almost every online service later.
Biometric capture: the operator captures a live photograph, all 10 fingerprints, and both iris scans.
Review and acknowledge: check the entered data on screen before signing.
Collect the slip: take your acknowledgment slip with the Enrolment ID (EID), which you need to track your application.
No Documents in Your Name?
You can still enrol. UIDAI provides two routes for people without standard proofs:
- Head of Family (HoF): a family member enrols you using their own documents plus a Proof of Relationship document naming you both.
- Introducer: for those with neither documents nor family proof, a UIDAI-appointed Introducer at the centre can verify your identity so you can still enrol.
Ask the operator at the centre which route fits your situation, both are official and free.
Child Enrolment (Bal Aadhaar, Age 0 to 5)
Children under 5 are issued a blue-coloured Bal Aadhaar.
Visit with the child: a parent or legal guardian must accompany the child.
Parent authentication: only a mother, father, or legal guardian can act as Head of Family. They provide their own Aadhaar and authenticate biometrically to authorise the child’s enrolment.
Proof of Relationship: carry a document linking parent and child, such as the child’s birth certificate.
Demographic data: submit the child’s name, date of birth, and gender. The address mirrors the parent’s Aadhaar automatically.
Photo only: no fingerprints or iris scans are taken under age 5, just a facial photograph.
Collect the slip with the Enrolment ID (EID).
Required Documents
Carry originals to the centre, they’re scanned and returned on the spot.
- Proof of Identity (name & photo): passport, PAN card, voter ID, or driving licence.
- Proof of Address (name & address): passport, voter ID, ration card, bank passbook, or a utility bill not older than 3 months.
- Proof of Date of Birth: birth certificate (mandatory for children born on or after 1 October 2023), passport, PAN card, or school leaving certificate.
- Proof of Relationship (child enrolment): birth certificate or passport showing both the parent’s and child’s name.
Checking Your Enrolment Status
With the full 28-digit Enrolment ID (the 14-digit number plus date and time) from your slip, you can check whether your Aadhaar has been generated.
Go to
myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in.Enter your full 28-digit EID exactly as printed on the receipt.
Enter the captcha and submit to view your current status.
How Long It Takes & When You Can Download It
After enrolment, your data packet goes to UIDAI for quality checks, validation, and biometric de-duplication before a number is issued. UIDAI’s official service standard is:
| Applicant | Generation Time (official standard) |
|---|---|
| Children (0 to 18) | Normally up to 30 days |
| Adults (18+) | Normally up to 180 days |
Common Questions
Can I enrol for Aadhaar online?
No. First-time enrolment always requires an in-person visit so your biometrics can be captured on official equipment. You can book an appointment online in advance, but the enrolment itself must be done at a centre. Only later updates (like documents or address) can be partly done online.
Is there any fee for a new Aadhaar?
No. First-time enrolment is completely free for everyone, adults and children. A centre that charges you for a new enrolment is not following UIDAI’s rules; you can report it on 1947.
Can I enrol if I’m missing some fingerprints or have an eye condition?
Yes. UIDAI’s system has provisions for exceptions, so you can still enrol even if one or more fingers or irises can’t be captured. The operator records the exception and proceeds with whatever biometrics are available.
Questions About Your Enrolment?
For a stuck application or trouble at a centre, UIDAI’s toll-free line 1947 is open 24/7. All official portals and contacts are collected on our quick reference page, and our UIDAI guide covers the helpline, Aadhaar Seva Kendras and regional offices.
