How to use this
Pick your document above, then the task you’re applying for. You’ll see the common categories of proof accepted, usually grouped as Proof of Identity, Proof of Address, and Proof of Date of Birth. One document can often satisfy more than one category, a passport, for example, frequently works as identity, address and date-of-birth proof all at once.
Name-matching is the most common rejection reason
Across all four documents, the single biggest cause of a rejected or delayed application is a name mismatch between your documents, spelling differences, missing initials, or a different word order. Before you apply, check that your name appears the same way across every document you plan to submit.
Common questions
Can one document cover more than one proof category?
Yes. Several documents, especially a passport, satisfy multiple categories at once, identity, address and date of birth. Check each document’s coverage in the official list for your specific application.
Is Aadhaar alone enough for a new PAN card?
No, not since 1 April 2026. PAN applications now require separate proof of identity, address and date of birth, Aadhaar alone can no longer be used as a single, sufficient document for a fresh PAN.
Is Voter ID registration free?
Yes. Registering for a new Voter ID via Form 6 is completely free, no fee is charged by the Election Commission at any stage.
What if I don’t have any of the listed documents?
Each service has a fallback route, UIDAI’s Head-of-Family option for Aadhaar, an affidavit route for date of birth on some Voter ID and passport applications. Check the official Document Advisor or helpline for your specific case.
Do utility bills expire as address proof?
Yes, typically. Most services require utility bills (electricity, water, gas, telephone) to be recent, usually within the last one to three months depending on the document and service.
