Which Document Do You Need?
A quick side-by-side before you pick a guide.
| Document | Issued By | Primarily Proves | Mandatory? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aadhaar | UIDAI | Identity + address, used for most KYC and OTP-based verification | Not legally mandatory, but needed almost everywhere in practice |
| PAN Card | Income Tax Dept. (via Protean/UTIITSL) | Tax identity, required for banking and financial transactions | Mandatory for tax filing and most financial accounts |
| Voter ID | Election Commission of India | Registration on the electoral roll, right to vote | Mandatory only if you want to vote; also accepted as general ID proof |
| Passport | Ministry of External Affairs | International travel, strongest proof of citizenship | Only mandatory if you plan to travel abroad |
New here? Start with these
If you’re setting up your documents for the first time, this is usually the easiest order: get your Aadhaar sorted first since most other applications ask for it as proof, then PAN if you don’t already have one, then Voter ID once you’re 18.
Common Questions
Do I need all four documents?
Not necessarily. Aadhaar and PAN cover most day-to-day identity and financial needs. Voter ID only matters if you want to vote (though it doubles as ID proof), and a passport is only needed if you plan to travel internationally.
Which document should I apply for first?
Aadhaar, in almost every case, since PAN, Voter ID, and passport applications all accept it as proof of identity and address, and having it first saves you a step on the other three.
