Aadhaar Card Update Guide
Keep your Aadhaar current for smooth access to banking, telecom, and government services. Learn the fees, and how to update your address, mobile number, and biometrics, step by step.
Current Fees & Deadlines
What you pay depends on what you’re updating and where you do it. The one genuinely free option is uploading fresh proof documents online, which UIDAI is currently waiving to encourage people to keep records current.
| Update Type | Fee |
|---|---|
| Document upload (PoI / PoA) on myAadhaar portal | Free till 14 Jun 2027 |
| Demographic update (name, address, DOB, etc.) | ₹75 |
| Biometric update (adult) | ₹125 |
| Child biometric (MBU) | Free at ages 5 to 7 (first time) and 15 to 17 |
How to Update Your Aadhaar Address Online
If you have relocated, you can update your Aadhaar address online without visiting a centre. Address is the one demographic field that’s fully self-service online.
Requirements
- Your current registered mobile number, essential for OTP verification on Aadhaar Online Services.
- A scanned copy of a valid Proof of Address (PoA) document. Accepted documents include a passport, voter ID, valid rent agreement, or a recent utility bill such as an electricity or water bill.
Step-by-Step Online Process
Go to the official myAadhaar portal at
myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in.Log in with your Aadhaar Number and verify using the OTP sent to your registered mobile number.
Go to the Address Update section and enter your new residential address carefully.
Upload your scanned Proof of Address document in JPG, PNG, or PDF format (usually under 2 MB).
Submit the request and save the Update Request Number (URN) to track your application.
Once submitted, UIDAI reviews the document before the change reflects. The service standard allows up to 90 days, though most updates complete much sooner.
Updating Your Mobile Number
Updating a mobile number is different from other updates: it cannot be done with a document upload, because there’s no paper “proof” of a phone number. It has to be verified in person or through the app’s biometric check.
If You Still Have Access to the Old Number
You can use the Aadhaar app: register with your currently linked number, go to the mobile update service, enter the new number, verify with OTP, complete Face Authentication, and pay the prescribed fee in-app.
How to Correct Your Name or Date of Birth
Unlike address, a correction to your name, date of birth or gender cannot be done online. UIDAI lists these as an Aadhaar centre service and says they are not available in the Aadhaar app for now. The online document upload above only re-submits proof of details that are already on record. So a correction means a visit to an Aadhaar Seva Kendra or authorised centre with the right document.
How Many Times You Can Change Each Detail
- Name: twice. Plan the change so one update fixes everything, such as spelling and surname together.
- Date of birth: only once. UIDAI has said this applies whether the date on record is verified, declared or approximate.
- Gender: once.
Documents for a Name Change
The document must be in your own name and carry your name and photograph. UIDAI copies the name exactly as it is written on the document, so check the spelling before you go.
- Valid Indian passport, voter ID, or driving licence.
- Ration or PDS photo card, or a service photo ID issued by a Central or State Government body, PSU, or regulatory or statutory body.
- Pensioner, freedom fighter or Pension Payment Order photo ID.
- Mark-sheet or certificate from a recognised board, university or higher education institution.
- Bank or Post Office passbook with your name and photograph.
- Marriage certificate or divorce decree. Without a photograph, bring a photo ID that carries your old name as well.
- Gazette notification, for a change in first name or full name.
- Transgender identity card or certificate.
Documents for a Date of Birth Change
- Birth certificate.
- Valid Indian passport.
- Mark-sheet or certificate from a recognised board, university or higher education institution.
- Service photo ID, or a pensioner or freedom fighter photo ID or Pension Payment Order.
- Transgender identity card or certificate.
Aadhaar itself is not in UIDAI’s list of date of birth proofs. Under 18 with a declared or approximate date of birth, a birth certificate is mandatory. If you earlier submitted a birth certificate, the new one must carry the same Birth Registration Number. If you earlier submitted another document, bring a corrected version of it or a birth certificate. A woman who changed her name after marriage can use date of birth documents issued before the marriage, along with proof of the name change.
Step-by-Step Process
Locate your nearest Aadhaar Seva Kendra and book a slot on UIDAI’s appointment page. Centres are open every day from 9:30 AM to 5:30 PM.
Carry the original document that shows the correct name or date of birth.
Fill in the Aadhaar Enrolment/Update Form and state clearly what needs to be corrected. The operator enters it from your document.
Your fingerprints or iris are used to verify you, so no OTP is needed here.
Pay the ₹75 fee. It is free if you update your biometrics in the same visit.
Collect the acknowledgment slip with your URN, and check the status until the update is generated.
How to Update Your Biometrics
Biometrics cover your photograph, fingerprints, and iris scans. Unlike address or document updates, biometric updates cannot be done online. You must visit an Aadhaar Seva Kendra in person, since your biometrics have to be captured on official equipment.
When You Need a Biometric Update
- Mandatory for children: children who enrolled before age 5 must update biometrics after turning 5 (MBU-1), and again after turning 15 (MBU-2), since fingerprints and iris aren’t captured for under-5s.
- Authentication failures: if your fingerprints are no longer recognised at banks, ration shops, or during KYC.
- Physical changes: worn fingerprints due to age or manual work, an eye condition affecting iris capture, or a significantly outdated photograph.
Step-by-Step Process
Locate your nearest Aadhaar Seva Kendra using the official UIDAI website, and book an appointment if slots are available.
Carry your Aadhaar number or e-Aadhaar copy. No proof documents are needed for a biometric-only update.
Fill in the Aadhaar Enrolment/Update Form at the centre and indicate that you need a biometric update.
The operator captures your photograph, fingerprints, and iris scan on official equipment.
Pay the ₹125 fee at the counter. Mandatory updates for children are free at ages 5 to 7 (first time) and 15 to 17.
Collect the acknowledgment slip with your 14-digit Update Request Number (URN) to track the request.
Common Questions
How long does an Aadhaar update take to reflect?
UIDAI’s official service standard allows up to 90 days, but in practice most demographic and document updates complete within a few days to two weeks. You’ll get an SMS once it’s processed, after which you can download a fresh e-Aadhaar.
How many times can I update my address or name?
Address can be updated whenever it genuinely changes. Some fields have lifetime limits: name can typically be updated twice, and date of birth and gender once each. Because of these caps, enter the details carefully to avoid wasting an attempt.
Can I update my details without a registered mobile number?
Online updates need OTP verification, so a working registered number is required for the self-service route. If you don’t have one, you must visit an Aadhaar Seva Kendra in person, where biometrics are used to verify you instead of an OTP.
Can I correct my name or date of birth online?
No. UIDAI lists name, date of birth and gender corrections as an Aadhaar centre service, and says they are not available in the Aadhaar app for now. Visit an Aadhaar Seva Kendra with a valid document in your own name.
Which document should I use for a name change after marriage?
A marriage certificate is accepted. If it has no photograph, bring a photo ID that carries your old name as well.
Can I change my date of birth a second time?
Not through the normal route. UIDAI allows one change in a lifetime. Beyond that, you can send an exception request to a UIDAI Regional Office with a self-declaration in the notified format and a birth certificate.
Where to Get Help
To check the status of an update or flag a problem, UIDAI’s helpline 1947 is available round the clock. The official Aadhaar contacts and links are all in one place too.
