Quick Guide

Tatkaal Passport: Fees, Documents & Process

Need a passport urgently? The Tatkaal scheme issues one in about 1 to 3 working days by moving police verification to after the passport is printed. This guide covers the exact documents, who can’t use it, fees, and how the fast-track process actually works.

How Tatkaal Is Different

Tatkaal isn’t a different kind of passport, it’s the same booklet through a faster lane. The speed comes from reordering the process:

  • Normal: police verification happens first, then the passport is printed.
  • Tatkaal: the passport is printed and dispatched first, and police verification is done afterwards.

Result: a clean Tatkaal application is usually dispatched by the third working day after your PSK visit (excluding the application day). A normal application typically takes 30 to 45 days end to end, because the passport office’s own processing (roughly 7 to 10 working days) only starts moving once police verification clears. Tatkaal works for both fresh and reissue cases.

Good to know: since 2019, Tatkaal no longer needs a Verification Certificate from a gazetted officer. Instead, you submit any three of the accepted documents listed below.

Documents: Any Three from the List

Along with your usual address, birth, and Non-ECR proofs (as applicable), the Tatkaal rule is:

  • Adults (18+): submit any three documents from the list below.
  • Minors (under 18): submit any two documents, from serial numbers 1 to 6 only.
Accepted documents (any three)
  • PVC / original / e-Aadhaar with verified digital signature (small cut-outs not accepted)
  • PAN Card
  • Student photo ID from a recognised educational institution
  • Birth certificate (under the Registration of Births and Deaths Act)
  • Ration card (latest / updated)
  • Last passport issued (for reissue only)
  • Voter ID (EPIC)
  • Driving licence (valid, within the RPO’s state)
  • Bank / Kisan / Post Office passbook (photo attested, latest transaction)
  • SC / ST / OBC certificate
  • Arms licence
  • Pension documents (ex-servicemen, old-age pension, etc.)
  • Service photo ID from Government / PSU / local body / public limited company
Minors note: only documents at serial 1 to 6 (Aadhaar, PAN, student ID, birth certificate, ration card, last passport) count, and you need any two of them.

Who Can’t Use Tatkaal

Tatkaal is blocked for certain cases, applying anyway gets your file downgraded to normal or rejected. It’s not available if:

  • You want any change in name (marriage, deed poll, etc.).
  • Your present address is outside the RPO’s jurisdiction.
  • It’s a minor’s application with Annexure C (e.g. parents divorced or separated).
  • You were repatriated at government cost, deported, or travelled on an Emergency Certificate.
  • You’re of Naga origin, or of J&K origin (including minors).
  • You have an adverse police report, are watch-listed, or a habitual passport loser.
Also not allowed (selected cases)
  • Fresh: citizens by registration/naturalisation, adopted children, child of a single parent or out of wedlock, surrogacy.
  • Reissue: lost / stolen passport, short-validity passport, passport damaged beyond recognition.
  • Change of gender, appearance, or signature; change/correction of date or place of birth; change of father / mother / spouse name.
Damaged, but still readable? If the passport number, your name and your photo are all legible, you can apply for reissue under Tatkaal. Only a passport damaged beyond recognition is excluded, and the final call rests with the Passport Office. A lost or stolen passport is excluded either way.

Tatkaal Fees (2026)

Tatkaal costs more than a normal passport because it adds a flat premium of ₹2,500 on top of the standard fee, in every category. These are the totals you actually pay, effective from the 1 July 2026 fee revision:

Service
Total Fee
Adult, 36 pages (fresh or reissue)
₹ 5,000
Adult, 60 pages (fresh or reissue)
₹ 6,000
Minor under 18, 36 pages
₹ 4,250
Damaged replacement, adult, 36 pages
₹ 7,500
Damaged replacement, adult, 60 pages
₹ 8,500

Since the premium is flat, upgrading to Tatkaal costs the same ₹2,500 whether you take a 36-page or 60-page booklet. Replacement rates apply only where the passport is damaged but still legible, since lost and beyond-recognition cases can’t use Tatkaal at all. Fees are paid online during booking and are non-refundable once an appointment is confirmed. Always check the exact amount with the official Fee Calculator, see the full breakdown on our Passport hub.

Applying Under Tatkaal

  1. Log in at passportindia.gov.in and start Apply for Fresh Passport / Re-issue of Passport, the form is the same as normal.
  2. Fill the application and submit to get your ARN. The Tatkaal choice is made at the payment/appointment stage, not in the form itself.
  3. Fill the “Undertaking for Tatkaal Scheme” (available in Hindi and English on the portal), it’s a mandatory declaration for Tatkaal.
  4. Pay & book: at Pay and Schedule Appointment, select the Tatkaal quota. Tatkaal slots open at a fixed time that varies by Passport Office (check the official “Appointment Opening Time” list for yours), and fill within minutes.
  5. Visit the PSK on your date with all originals and any three documents. Once your status shows Granted, the passport is dispatched, typically by the third working day.
One reschedule only: since 1 April 2023, a Tatkaal appointment can be rescheduled just once (normal allows three). Plan your PSK visit carefully.
Applying with family? Each applicant needs their own Passport Seva login and appointment, even if you’re booking from the same device, the system ties one record to one login. Some families file one Tatkaal and one Normal application together, prioritising whoever’s travel is closest.

Police Verification Under Tatkaal

This is the key thing to understand: Tatkaal doesn’t cancel police verification, it re-sequences it.

  • Post-verification (usual): the passport is issued and dispatched first, and the police verify afterwards. This is what makes Tatkaal fast.
  • Pre-verification (some cases): if your history can’t be readily verified, the office may insist on verification before issue, which removes the speed advantage.

Even after you receive the passport, cooperate with the later police visit, an adverse report can still affect your passport. You can track both the application and police verification status online.

Common Questions

How fast is a Tatkaal passport really?

For a clean application, it’s usually dispatched by the third working day after your PSK visit (excluding the application day), against 30 to 45 days for a normal application that waits on police verification first. Delivery by Speed Post is on top of that, and any document issue or a pre-verification requirement resets the clock.

Do I still need a gazetted officer’s certificate for Tatkaal?

No. That requirement was abolished in 2019. Now you simply submit any three documents from the accepted list (any two from serials 1 to 6 for minors). Anyone telling you a gazetted certificate is mandatory is out of date.

Can I use Tatkaal for a name change or a lost passport?

No. Tatkaal is not available for name changes, lost or stolen passports, changes to date/place of birth, gender, appearance, or signature, and several other categories. A passport that is damaged but still readable is the exception and can go through Tatkaal. For everything else, you use the normal route. Check the ineligible list above before applying.

Is Tatkaal worth the extra fee?

If your travel is fixed and close, yes. Tatkaal turns a 30-to-45-day wait into a few working days, which is a real difference when you have a job abroad, a medical emergency, or short-notice admission. If your trip is months away, the ₹2,500 premium buys you nothing the normal route wouldn’t deliver in time.
